Exposure to state violence and substance use

We analyze whether exposure to state violence affects substance use at the individual level. In doing so, we bring together political science and public health literatures on effects of violence, analyzing an outcome that is neglected in a type remains understudied health. leverage unique panel study, Population Council’s Survey Young People Egypt (SYPE), test rates are higher among those who were exposed during country’s 2011 revolution, moment intense against civilians. Results demonstrate direct increases use; respondents significantly more likely drugs, alcohol, tobacco than not. Our findings robust specifications control for respondents’ reported prior revolution family friends, factors identified medical research as key predictors. study sheds light fundamental predicament authoritarian governance downstream violence.
